Who needs to buy a dress form when you can make your own? In this fashion class, Fabiola Arias taught the girls how to make a custom dress form, tailored to each individual students’ size. The best part about making your own dress form is that the only materials you need are duct tape, an old t-shirt, some newspaper, and a friend. This is how to make it:
1. Wearing your old t-shirt, have a friend wrap your torso (from shoulders to waist) in duct tape. A good two to three layers is a sturdy amount.
2. When your t-shirt is completely covered in duct tape, have your friend carefully cut your t-shirt straight from the bottom to under your arm.
3. Once you are freed from the “shell” of your dress form, you can cover up the slit with duct tape. Seal up the arm and neck holes.
4. Stuff the shell with crumpled up newspaper. Make sure there is no space inside of the shell so it is compact, solid and sturdy (you don’t want your dress form to be unstable while draping fabric).
5. When your dress form is stuffed and stable, you can seal the bottom with duct tape.
You now have your very own dress form! Prop it up on a makeshift stand using an old broom stick and a wooden base. You can also hang it up by taping on a hanger.
Either way, this dress form is easy, fun and really handy for bringing your designs to life!
